Sicilian Culture - Making sense of Sicily and her culture.

Goethe, one of the greatest poets who ever lived, said after his sojourn to Sicily, "To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything."

Why does Sicily play such a critical role in Italian history and in her culture? We know that the Sicilian treasure is a very unique collection of: amazing monuments, art, archeological sites; UNESCO patrimonies from 20 different cultures over 3,000 years of history; her natural beauty; the largest variety of culinary dishes in all of Italy with superb wines to match; and rooted traditions and celebrations from the Mediterranean region and beyond.

From the Phoenicians to the Romans, from the Scandinavians to Arabs, including Africans, Americans, and many others, everyone came, lived, and left their imprint on the most popular and largest island in southern Europe.

Sicily cannot be considered merely an island. It is a miniature continent, a melting pot of races, cultures, languages, myths and religions. In ancient times, Sicily was literally the center of the civilized world. Learn how the four natural elements – crystal blue seas, the biggest volcano in Europe, “bitter” soil, and sweet air – have contributed to contemporary culture.

Learn about the Sicilians and how their values guide everyday behavior in their life – their generosity and sense of hospitality are proverbial; how the wild traffic is a metaphor of Sicilian life; the whole language of hand gestures; and how is it that villagers and the mafia can coexist?
Let’s follow Goethe’s clue and unravel these mysteries to understand Sicily’s connection with the rest of Italy through real stories of real life in Sicily shared and explained by a Sicilian.
