Shooting On-site: Getting Up-close and Personal
~ Capturing your subject's story ~
Da Vinci Capers ~ A Personal Renaissance Journey will host Massimo Bassano, a freelance international photojournalist, for a one week* photographic workshop on July 17 – 24, 2008, in Boulder, Colorado. *Option of a 4-day or 8-day workshop.

In his first Colorado appearance, Massimo shares with us how photographers can capture that exceptional photo when they become part of the scene they are photographing and "touch" the lives of their subjects, rather than just watching them through a lens.
We learn that the location's "story" - becoming familiar with the history, the culture and social context of the people - is the secret of a taking a great photo. With an open mind we follow where the story takes us.
Each day becomes a photographic adventure. Capturing the morning light and coolness of the day, we shoot together and independently. In the afternoons we gather for discussions, return to do more shooting and download or develop film overnight. We will have discussions on all aspects of the shoot: issues of light, composition, and technical points. We talk about preparing for a shoot, how to research an area, problems of approaching people or property, how and when to use a small strobe and other types of equipment. Personal questions or photographic concerns should be written and e-mailed to Da Vinci Capers prior to the workshop. As with other Da Vinci Capers’ adventures, we practice sfumato – flexibility for unexpected creative opportunities, varied photo skills and the weather.
Like Massimo, one may take this new knowledge of "Shooting On-site" to any city, any village and any location in the world. For people who are interested in writing original narratives to compliment their photographs, Massimo will also be able to offer his advice.
Massimo’s authentic approach of “getting up- close and personal” has proven to be successful. In Calabria, Italy, Massimo was the first photographer to be granted permission to live for three months amongst the Chartusians monks. His immersion to document the 900 year old brotherhood resulted in the award-winning book, The Color of Silence. It was the first time in 900 years that the Chartusians accepted a photographer to document their private life.
His words and pictures have grace major magazines around the world such as, National Geographic, GEO, Ciclismo, and MAX France. Working as a freelance photojournalist since 1990, Massimo has worked along side some of the greats in photography: Bob Sacha, William Albert Allard, David Harvey, and George Steinmetz. Presently, Massimo is working on-site in Rome with Bob Krist for National Geographic Traveler. Besides working with Da Vinci Capers, he also teaches for National Geographic and Maine Media Workshops. (Note: Google Massimo Bassano to discover his passion for photography.)
Come join us for a new adventure and rare opportunity in photography with one of the world's greatest photographers. For more information, contact Barbara Hardesty at (303) 284-1383, or e-mail: barb@davincicapers.com.

July 25 - 27, 2008 - For everyone who has ever attended a Da Vinci Capers' event and people who would like to learn more, you won't want to miss this! Fun times in the wild, wild west!
Da Vinci Capers in Boulder – 2008
It’s time for some summer fun! After five years experiencing the arts in Italy, Da Vinci Capers brings its philosophy to our backyard of Boulder, CO. For everyone across the country who participated in our “capers” and their friends, Mike and Barbara are cooking up a special dinner in the home in north Boulder. The weekend is an “ala carte” affair – full of options typical of Boulder’s fun summer events.
On Saturday, The Colorado Academy of Art will be offering us a hands-on art experience in mixed media (pencil, charcoal and pastels) by the Boulder Creek.
The Academy is an “Atelier” in the French and Eastern Europe tradition. It offers two and four year classical certification. Classical training yet encouraging individual creativity, The Colorado Academy of Art will provide us with a half day workshop in a beautiful setting.
Laudisio’s Restaurant is perhaps the most authentic of our Italian restaurants and consistently gets voted “The Best Of…” in Boulder year after year. A familiar face with locals, Antonio Laudisio is also a television celebrity Chef! He is passionate about food, honoring its history and thoughtful about food’s future. Along with Barbara, Antonio will give us a “Market Walk” on how to choose the best vegetables for our luncheon to be cooked that afternoon. We will then have a spirited demonstration and luncheon in their private dining room. We’ll have a prize for Sensazione! Prepare yourself – know your nose!
Sunday is reserved particularly for the out-of-state guests (but, of course, everyone is welcomed!). One should not leave Colorado without going into Rocky Mountain National Park – the most eastern part of the Continental Divide with spectacular views and walls of snow as we drive above the Alpine. A luncheon will be waiting for us at the historic Stanley Hotel in Estes Park (made famous by Stephen King’s novel, “The Shining”).
Vieni! Come to Colorado and join us in another wonderful Da Vinci Capers’ event!
